Port Melbourne Colts JFC – Player Participation Update

Following a recent Committee and Football Operations meeting, we want to clarify how the club manages teams and player numbers.

Our focus is simple: ensuring every kid who wants to play footy can do so at the Port Colts.

After reviewing the SMJFL bylaws, consulting with our Footy Operations group, speaking with the AFL, and discussing the issue at the committee level, we want to clearly outline the club’s position on team sizes, team management, and our overall approach.

At the Port Colts, we don't cap teams or close registrations for any child who wants to play footy. We are a community club, and our priority is giving every kid the opportunity to get on the field.

By taking this inclusive approach across all age groups, our goal is for the club to grow to the point where we can field multiple teams within each age group, allowing for proper grading so that every player is participating at the right level and enjoying footy that suits them.

To clarify a common misconception around team sizes, particularly in the younger age groups, the 2026 SMJFL Bylaws state that in the U11–U14 age groups, the minimum number of players on the field at any time is 14.

With our U9, U10, U11 and U12 mixed teams already approaching 30 players each and other age groups heading rapidly in that direction, this means:

  • We will look to form additional teams where numbers allow, meaning we end up with kids playing in their appropriate grade and age group

  • Players may move between teams within an age group if needed to ensure both teams are fully fielded

  • Coaches and team managers will be supported to manage larger squads, and this will include extra resources, more coaching and training support, and additional club support wherever necessary to help manage teams and kids

Our aim is to build a positive and inclusive environment that supports:

  • Player development

  • Strong, competitive teams

  • A great club culture

We will continue to keep families and coaching groups updated as the season approaches.
